John Dougherty is a self-taught Traditionalist watercolor artist. He relies on many of his own encounters with nature and the wildlife of northwestern Montana for inspiration in the wildlife art he creates. Growing up on the shores of beautiful Flathead Lake and close to the crown jewels of the Rockies, Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park, John was afforded the unique opportunity to photograph the abundant wildlife and phenomenal bird populations in natural settings around them. These photos are the studies used to create the photorealistic style bird-art and wildlife paintings that now hang in many homes across the United States and Canada.
John has participated in numerous art shows and has donated to non-profit causes such as Ducks Unlimited, and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, as well as many local charities, school and other fund-raising events.
Several years ago, John sat down and painted the family cat (an 18-year old Tom named Freddy) which opened up a much sought after market for Pet Portraits. Devoted animal lovers are choosing to immortalize their best friends with pet portraits.
John recently created John Dougherty Art Promotions, to highlight the artwork of another very talented Montana artist, Clifford Nielsen. This truly gifted artist creates Western and Wildlife art in several mediums: Oils, Pastels, Acrylic, pen and ink, as well as watercolor paintings. Clifford Nielsen has also won awards in sculpting. Both Clifford Nielsen and John Dougherty accept commissioned work.
